Monday, February 20 at 10:00 CET | IVC: Wendeline van Houten & Rik Kuppen

Upon completing her bachelor's degree under Lenie van den Heuvel and Sasja Hunneo, young soprano Wendeline van Houten continued her master's degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Her coaches are pianists Carolien Drewes and Peter Nilsson. Wendeline has appeared in many operas, including a performance as Violetta in a program dedicated to Verdi at the Opéra Mosset in France, and in Offenbach's La belle Hélène in which she performed the role of Parthénis. Rik Kuppen (1994) started playing the piano at the age of thirteen. In 2011, he was admitted to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree under the guidance of Ellen Corver in June 2015. He is now studying for his master’s degree. In April 2012, Rik received first prize in the Prinses Christina Concours, a national competition for young musical talent in the Netherlands.

Monday, February 20 at 14:00 CET | IVC Finals: Duo Marie Perbost & Joséphine Ambroselli Brault

French soprano Marie Perbost (1989) and French pianist Joséphine Ambroselli Brault (1988) perform at the IVC as a duo. Perbost studied at the Maîtrise de Radio France, performing concerts throughout France and Europe. She has worked with celebrated conductors, including Kurt Masur and Myung-whun Chung. Perbost pursued her studies under Anne le Bozec at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. Together with Josephine Ambroselli Brault, they won first prize at the Nadia and Lili Boulanger International Voice-Piano Competition in Paris.

Tuesday, February 21 at 14:00 CET | IVC Masterclass: Maria Fiselier & Nicola Rose

Dutch mezzo-soprano Maria Fiselier is considered one of Holland’s top emerging artists, praised for her “exceptionally warm, opulent voice, used with sensitivity”. Her most recent highlights include her debut role as Emmy in Marschner’s Der Vampyr, and Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, both at the Komische Oper Berlin, as well as the role of Mlle Dangeville in a concert version of Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur at La Monnaie opera house in Brussels.

Tuesday, February 21 at 21:00 CET | IVC Finals: Lied Duo - Agata Schmidt & Bartolomiej Wezner

Born in Torun, Poland in 1985, Agata Schmidt took early music lessons in violin at the Karol Szymanowski Music School. From 2004 to 2010, she studied voice at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and in 2011 went on to postgraduate studies at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.

Wednesday, February 22 at 10:00 CET | IVC Masterclass: Zinzi Frohwein & Tim Sabel

Dutch soprano Zinzi Frohwein started her vocal studies in 2009 at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where she was coached by Sasja Hunnego. She graduated cum laude in 2013, with an honourable award for outstanding vocal, musical and performance skills in a wide variety of styles. She was also awarded the Fock Medal for the best exam performance. Zinzi continued her vocal studies at the Dutch National Opera Academy where she was coached by Peter Nilsson, Nathalie Doucet and Brian Masuda, and sang the roles of Alcina in Händel’s opera of the same name, Contessa in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Silvia Lombardi in Korngold’s Die Stumme Serenade.

Wednesday, February 22 at 21:00 CET | IVC Finals: Lied Duo - Ellen Valkenburg & Andrea Vasi

Ellen Valkenburg (1988) trained to be a music teacher at the Conservatory of Tilburg, the Netherlands, graduating in 2008. She continued her studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, studying voice and graduating in May of 2012. She has been praised for her “authentic music selection and performance”. In June 2014, Valkenburg completed her master’s degree with Maria Acda and Sasja Hunnego at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. At the IVC Finals, she is accompanied by Dutch-Romanian pianist Andrea Vasi (1989).

Thursday, February 23 at 10:00 CET | IVC Interview: Christa Ludwig

Christa Ludwig (1928) is a retired German dramatic mezzo-soprano, distinguished for her performances of opera, Lieder, oratorio, and other major religious works including masses and passions, as well as solos contained in symphonic literature. Her vocal career spanned from the late 1940s until the early 1990s. Today she is widely recognised as one of the most significant and eminent singers of the 20th century.

Thursday, February 23 at 14:00 CET | IVC Finals: Lied Duo - Milan Siljanov & Nino Chokhonelidze

Bass-baritone Milan Siljanov studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama under the tutelage of Professor Rudolf Piernay. In 2014, he was awarded both the first prize and audience prize at the 60th International Vocal Competition in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, for his duo performance with pianist Nino Chokhonelidze – who is not only his musical partner, but also his wife. Exactly one year after the pair’s victory at the IVC, they won the prestigious Kohn Foundation International Song Competition at London’s Wigmore Hall.

Friday, February 24 at 10:00 CET | IVC Masterclass: Carina Vinke & Eke Simons

Alto Carina Vinke (1980) has won critical acclaim for the strikingly dark quality of her voice and her dramatic talent. Born in the Netherlands, she has performed widely in her home country and abroad since the age of nine. She sings opera, oratorio, lieder, and contemporary music. Her operatic work includes the title roles of Georges Bizet’s Carmen and Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice as well as the roles of Hermia in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Zita in Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Bradamante in G. F. Händel’s Alcina, Fenena in Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, and Schwertleite in Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre. At the 2014 IVC, she appears with pianist Eke Simons (1981).

Friday, February 24 at 14:00 CET | IVC Finals: Lied Duo - Florieke Beelen & Abigail Richards

Mezzo soprano Florieke Beelen (1987) recently received several awards, including four prizes at the 2014 International Vocal Competition in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Among them was the prestigious Arleen Auger All-round Prize for the most versatile singer. At the 2015 Belvedere Competition, she won the Young Talent Prize and was declared a rising star by Dutch newspaper, NRC. At the June 2016 Stenhammar Music Competition in Sweden, she won two prizes, including the celebrated Stenhammar Prize.

Saturday, February 25 at 14:00 CET | IVC Finals: Lied duo - Eric Jurenas & Bretton Brown

Heralded by the New York Times as an artist with “beautiful, well-supported tone and compelling expression”, and defined as having an “exceptionally clear tone with vocal flexibility”, (Cleveland Plain Dealer) American countertenor Eric Jurenas is quickly making a name for himself in both the opera and concert scene. After a brief stint as a baritone in his first year of university studies, he made the daunting switch to the opposite side of the vocal spectrum.

The 2013 IVC features the Wagner Academy: a number of masterclasses, lectures, and music films open to the general public. In this broadcast, singers who took part in the Academy present their Wagnerian repertoire to the public. The Wagner Academy was made possible thanks to a collaboration between the IVC and the Pierre Boulez Foundation, the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, and the Wagner Association.
