Stingray Brava starts the month of July to the sound of a special program dedicated to Verdi, composed entirely of premieres! Live the exquisite operas of the great Italian master, including a version of Attila (1846) presented in the spectacular setting of the Mariinsky Theater, or Un Ballo in maschera (1859), performed by the Leipzig Opera. The program also includes two gala concerts filmed in Berlin and Parma, which include memorable arias sung by renowned soloists, such as Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. Our special Grand Giuseppe Gala begins July 2 with the documentary Fly, thought, on Golden Wings, in which the famous baritone Thomas Hampson tells the life of the composer.

In this documentary about Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), the popular American baritone Thomas Hampson (*1955) tells us about the life of this much-loved Italian composer. Hampson illustrates Verdi's life story by performing several arias (among which 'Fly, thought, on golden wings') from the composer's most famous operas, such as 'Rigoletto', 'Aida', and 'La traviata'.


Tuesday, July 3 at 21:00 CEST | Verdi - Attila

Based on Attila, King of the Huns by Friedrich Werner, this version of Giuseppe Verdi's powerful and poetic opera (1813-1901) features the famous Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role. Taking place in the middle of the fifth century, Attila portrays in the fall of the Roman Empire and offers a dramatic reflection on freedom, courage, and hope. The Mariinsky Theater Orchestra and Choir are conducted by Valeri Guergiev. Soloists include Ildar Abdrazakov, Vladislav Sulimsky, Anna Markarova, Sergei Skorokhodov, Mikhail Makarov, and Timur Abdikeyev.

In 2001, as part of the Verdi year, some of the greatest singers of our time, including Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, gathered at the Teatro Padiglione Palacassa in Parma to celebrate the legacy of the Italian maestro as part of the Gran Gala di Verdi. Giuseppe Verdi undoubtedly possessed the most necessary gift to the opera composer: the ability to translate the emotion of the characters through music and to make it live to the public. The program of this tribute Gala to Verdi includes scenes and arias from the great works of the composer, including Il trovatore, Nabucco, Rigoletto, The traviata, A ballo in maschera, Don Carlo, Aida, Othello, Falstaff, Ernani, Il corsaro , The Forza del Destino, and Jerusalem, performed by the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the direction of Zubin Mehta.

Recording of the 2000 New Year's Eve Concert at the Philharmonie in Berlin. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's death, the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of maestro Claudio Abbado perform highlights from "Un Ballo in Maschera", "Don Carlos", "Rigoletto", "La Traviata" and "Falstaff". With Ramón Vargas, Andrea Rost, Lucio Gallo, Massimo Giordano, Enrico Facini, Anthony Mee, Anatoli Kotscherga, Alan Titus, Carmela Remigio, Stella Doufexis, Larissa Diadkova, Elisabeth Futral.

Recorded at the Leipzig Opera in November 2005, this version of Verdi's famous opera Un ballo in maschera promises viewers a delightful musical evening. Riccardo Chailly, who took his first steps as general director of the Leipzig Opera with this staging, directs the Gewandhausorchestra, a cast of singers accustomed to the work of Verdi, such as Massimiliano Pisapia, Franco Vassallo, Chiara Taigi, Annamaria Chiuri, Eun Yee You and Herman Wallén, as well as operas in Zurich and Leipzig. As captivating as a thriller, but delivering a passionate charge as only Verdi can do, Un ballo in maschera is a story of love, power, politics and murder that takes place in the United States of the 19th century. Italian director Ermanno Olmi signs the scenography.
